Living the Last Part

The part we have been waiting for.
The now of someday.
The reward. The treat and retreat.
The blue ribbon days where there
Is no lack, no scramble, no more wanting
Or waiting for what isn’t yet.

Just a comfortable recliner for the
Midafternoon nap.
The ticket to leave next week for
A place so foreign you can’t imagine.
The days of the slow down then the
Effort of the speed up
When relevance slips and
Purpose drains with the last rinse
Of the early supper dishes.

How will you live this now?
This last part that you have pined for,
Yearned for, slaved for, and now have
Arrived at empty handed and unprepared
For the deafening silence and the
Empty calling of the days.
Fill it. Fritter it. Waste it. Scream through it.
Battle it. Caress it. Taste it like the first forkful
Of the two layer chocolate cake made
By someone else for you on a day
As ordinary as these years you are living
That are now the last part.
