The Tides

The gods snap their fingers
And the full moon smiles in
Anticipation. We scurry through
Our lives thinking thinking thinking.
Believing that we can bend gravity
And the heartbeats of others to
Our will. That we can resolve
Wanting and needing with sex and
Heat and a coerced promise of forever
And always just you and just me and
What we make together as if
Those choices were ours and not
The flow of the tides that are pushed
And pulled against the will of the unseen,
Hitting the beach with a confidence
It doesn’t have. A fake roar and lashing
Of power that can be given and taken
In the drowning of expired breath.
